Smart Investing@your library® is one of the special programs offered by the 50+ Transition Center as a result of a grant from the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA) Investor Education Foundation and the American Library Association (ALA). No products or services are promoted at any program – the purpose is to provide effective, unbiased financial education.


All Smart Investing events are free.

Free parking is available at all branches and at the main library free parking is available at Yale's Temple Street lot for programs after 4 pm.

Morningstar Investment Research Center

Do you want to find the current trading price of a stock, review financial information for a publicly traded company, or see the Morningstar rating for a mutual fund?  Maybe you want to see how your assets are distributed or you want to find out how much you need to invest in order to retire. These questions and more can be answered when you check out the new Morningstar Investment Research Center

Morningstar provides information on companies, mutual funds, Exchange Traded Funds, various investment indexes and markets, and easy-to-use portfolio tools and calculators for savings.  In addition to these great resources you can use on your own, Morningstar also offers webinar training to use the database the first Thursday of each month at 12 pm.  Click here for information on how to attend a free session.

Monthly Events:

One-on-One Computer Classes - Tuesdays from 4:00-5:00 pm and 5:00-6:00 pm

Do you want to email your friends and family members, read the latest news online, see pictures of your grandchildren? If you are over 50 years old, sign up for computer tutoring across generations. One hour one-on-one sessions at your pace. No prior knowledge of computers is necessary.

Advanced registration required.  Call 203-946-7001 and leave your name, telephone number.  You will receive a return call to confirm your one hour spot.
Computer Classes - Mondays from 5:00-6:00 pm and 6:30-7:30 pm
Want to learn more about using computers?  Monday evenings adult computer classes are available for those with some computer knowledge but want to learn more.  Classes cover topics such as the Internet, Microsoft  2010, and E-mail.

Ask a Lawyer - 1st Wednesday of the month from 5:30-7:00 pm
Have a legal question you need answered? Have a private conversation with a lawyer.  Sign in at Transition Center at Main Library on the day of event. 
Benefits Screening for People Over 60 - 2nd Wednesday of the month from 12:00-2:00 pm
Free Benefits Screening for people over 60 years old to help determine if you are receiving all the benefits to which you are entitled, including prescription drugs, energy assistance, financial assistance and more.   
Elm Street Book Discussion Club - 3rd Wednesday of the month from 6:00-7:00 pm
The Elm Street Book Club books are available in the lobby each month and are circulated through a grant with the Connecticut Humanities Council.  Check our Calendar to see upcoming selections. 
Get Your Passport - 4th Wednesday of the month from 1:00-3:00 pm
Taking a trip? Get help with your passport application.  More information on what to bring and costs are available on the Calendar tab. 
Social Security - Main Library and Wilson Library - By Appointment Only
A representative from the Social Security Office will help you register for benefits and answer questions about your individual circumstances.
